Last week, we spotted a news report from a topping out Ceremony, featuring a construction beam, customized with Doctors Hospital's Logo and covered with signatures as it was hoisted to the top of one of the hospital's towers. We recognized the beam immediately. We customized it.
What Is a Topping Out Ceremony?
If you're not in the construction world, you might not have heard the term. A topping out ceremony marks the placement of the final, and highest, steel beam in a new building. It's a pivotal moment the structural skeleton of the project is complete. It brings stakeholders together to mark progress, boosts morale, and symbolically blesses the future of the building.
The History
The ancient tradition traces back to Scandinavian/Norse cultures, where builders would place a tree or evergreen branch at the top of a newly completed structure to appease the tree spirits they believed lived in the timber. The idea was: we took your wood, here's an offering in return. It was a gesture of gratitude and a reverence for the materials that made the building possible.
It spread through Europe and became embedded in construction culture, particularly in Germany and the UK, before crossing over to North America. In some European countries it's still called the "Richtfest" (German) or "topping out" in the UK. The details have evolved, but the spirit hasn't changed: stop, mark the moment, and honor the people who built something.
The Beam That Gets Sealed Inside Forever
And the thing that makes this tradition so powerful? Those signatures don't come down. The beam gets sealed inside the structure for the entire life of the building. The signatures of the ironworkers, crane operators, project managers, nurses, and administrators are literally embedded in the walls of the finished building.
A Milestone for Augusta
Doctors Hospital's topping out ceremony marked the completion of the steel beam placement for two additional floors to it's burn unit tower, the first of two tower expansions and a Freestanding ER location in Evans, GA. As a part of Doctor's Hospital's, developing Graduate Medical Education program that will allow the hospital to train new physicians, the completed expansions will make way for 110 new full-time jobs.
Proud to Be Part of the Story
At Keen Signs & Graphics, we create signage for construction projects of all sizes. Keen Signs produces job site signs, safety signage, wayfinding systems, ADA-compliant packages, and yes, custom pieces like ceremonial beams.
Most of the time, our work marks the beginning of a project; guiding crews, identifying hazards, and directing visitors. This time, our work marked the end of a major phase. The beam completes the supporting structure and carries the signatures of the construction crew and supporting roles who made it happen, sealed inside a building that will serve this community for generations.
